Salomone Ottolenghi, a Venetian merchant who moved to Milan in 1845, died here in 1887 leaving a rich legacy to build the synagogue in via Guastalla in Milan, which marked an important moment in the history of the Milan Jewish community. Indeed, the Synagogue, inaugurated with great pomp in 1892 as Guido Lopez wrote, “is the best demonstration of the prestige that the Jewish community has gained within Milanese society in general.”

The epitaph is a reminder of his legacy.
