Maurizio Hoffman was born in Hungary in 1850, and his wife, Fanny Waldman, in 1860. They died eight months apart in 1926. Sculptor Vincenzo Cattò (Clivio 1878 – Milan 1938) created a medallion featuring the couple’s faces and two bronze sculptures of women, one of whom weeps over the two figures.
Cattò attended the Brera Academy and initially collaborated with renowned sculptors and architects such as Butti, Wildt, Argenti, and Pogliaghi before opening his own studio in 1906. Particularly active in funerary sculpture, he created numerous bronze and stone groups and figures at the Monumental Cemetery of Milan. His notable works include the Monument to the Fallen in Clivio and The Last Oration, depicting Christ praying in Gethsemane, which was used for the sculptor’s own tomb in the Clivio cemetery.
