Carlo Carvaglio was born in Pisa in 1862. He managed his father’s industrial company before moving to Milan before World War I to establish a private bank. Deeply saddened by the death of his son Giulio, he left 400,000 lire to Milan’s Ospedale Maggiore upon his own death in 1930, which commissioned Mario Sironi to paint his portrait for the gallery of benefactors.

A bas-relief was erected on his tomb, depicting his daughter Matilde embracing his soul as it ascends after death, with the epitaph: “To her father, who lived and lives in her love, Matilde.”
