Name: Pisa Aedicule
Location: field 2, no. 9-10
Author: Carlo Maciachini (architect)
Execution date: 1885
To the left of the previous tomb, this was designed by architect Maciachini in 1885 for the family of Senator Ugo Pisa, born in Ferrara in 1845 and deceased in Milan in 1910. Garibaldian, liberal and progressive, he began working in the bank Zaccaria Pisa, founded in 1831 by his grandfather in Ferrara, which in a few years became one of the most important financial institutions in the country. He was a member of the newspaper Il Tempo, directed by Claudio Treves, and acquired control of the newspaper Il Secolo. Ugo Pisa, however, soon devoted himself to public activities and in 1892 became president of the Chamber of Commerce and city councilor until 1897. He supported philanthropic institutions of various kinds and in 1898 he was appointed senator of the Kingdom of Italy and became part of the radical liberal wing, supporting various proposals to protect workers’ rights. He was involved in the Humanitarian Society from the time of its foundation after receiving a legacy from Prospero Loira. As a radical liberal he supported the protection of workers’ rights and was president of the Permanent Labor Committee.
The marble aedicule has elegant decorations around the wrought iron portal, while the rose window has a Middle Eastern decorative motif. The wooden chair currently located in the central pavilion comes from this tomb.
