Carlo Schapira, born in Romania in 1880, became the commercial director of Cotonificio Bustese and later purchased it in 1915 with his partner Antonio Tognella, leading the company to a rapid growth process between the two World Wars. After World War II, his partner returned his share of ownership. He died in Milan in 1967. He was the inspirer and major benefactor of numerous post-war initiatives, from assisting refugees from Germany to the reconstruction of the Temple and the retirement home. In 1960, he founded the Italo-Israeli Bank with other partners.

He is buried in a simple enclosure with a low balustrade alongside his wife Gianna, his son Andrea, and two of his wife’s sisters.
