Johanan Besso was born in Arta, Greece, in 1883 and died in Milan in 1929, probably a relative of Marco Besso. He was married to Allegra Johanan, who died in 1931.

The architect Manfredo d’Urbino designed the monument in 1932, featuring a circular base made of polished Biella granite and six columns made of Labrador granite. Each niche contains an oil lamp with a Star of David. On one corner of the base, there is a flower holder consisting of a sphere and three cornucopias.

The monument also commemorates Menahem Besso, born in 1890, his wife Allegra Zaccar, and their daughters Lina, born in 1921, and Elsa, born in 1928, who were arrested in Tirano on December 30, 1943, and deported from Milan’s central station on January 30, 1944, with destination Auschwitz.
